How Do I...

Always use persistent URLs

A persistent URL is a link that will consistently point to an article, journal, or other resource. Persistent URLs are also known as permalinks, durable links, persistent links, document URLs, permanent links, or possibly other names depending upon the database.

Why can't I copy the URL from the browser's address bar?

The URLs that appear in the browser's address bar while searching subscription databases typically contain session-based or search-based information. These URLs are only valid for a single session and will not be active when copied and used at a later time.

How do I find persistent URLs?

Persistent URLs are typically found on the article record or journal record. However, the location varies for each database. Please see the Creating Links to Content tab that the top of this guide for further information.

Why use a persistent URL when I can upload the article to Blackboard?

Without appropriate authorization or permission, you may be in violation of copyright law or license restrictions.

Apply the proxy prefix

License agreements governing usage of the online resources (including electronic journals, ebooks and databases) require that we ensure off-campus access is restricted to currently enrolled CSCC students/CSCC faculty and staff.  The CSCC Library, in conjuction with OhioNET, maintains a proxy server for this purpose.

When creating links to licensed material, always place the proxy prefix,

http://cscc.ohionet.org/login?url=

at the beginning of the URL to ensure that off-campus users will be able to access the resource.

Note: Off-campus students will be asked to enter their name and Cougar ID number before gaining access to licensed material.

Common Questions

Where can I find the journal...?

Try the following tools:

  • CUFTS Journal Search Tool is useful if you already know the title or ISSN of the journal you are looking to find. This tool will help you identify the databases that contain a specific journal.
  • Electronic Journal Center is useful for browsing for journals in the Electronic Journal Center by title or by subject.
  • Library Catalog can aid in identifying our holdings for a particular journal. Many records contain links to an electroinic equivalent.
  • Can't find it? Call the Reference Department at 614-287-2460
